chapter 3: phrases ii - introduction

This chapter will explore the complexity of our language to a greater degree by introducing non-finite verb phrases as key modifiers in our language. As a verb without tense, NONFINITE VERB PHRASES do not occur as part of a main verb phrase; instead, nonfinite verb phrases function nominally, adjectivally, or adverbially.

Before describing the function of infinitive, participle, and gerund phrases in the context of clauses and sentences, this chapter begins expanding on the FUNCTION SLOTS introduced as “hanging out” in the previous chapter.
